Silk in Wound Healing

The relevance of Silk in wound healing

Wound healing is an extraordinarily fascinating area of science which is directly relevant to ‘anti-ageing’ skincare because it involves both skin tissue repair and skin tissue regeneration. It is a multi-faceted process involving physical, chemical and cellular events and it reminds us how miraculous the human body is.

The most direct connection between silk and wound healing is collagen production. As we age, the skin’s collagen level depletes by 1% every year. A loss of collagen affects the texture, elasticity and hydration levels of skin. During the wound healing process, it is the production of collagen that is responsible for repairing and restoring skin.

The role of silk in improving the wound healing process has been extensively proven studied in medical literature. Wound healing is one of the most complex processes that our skin goes through, and when silk is applied to wounds, it not only significantly accelerates the wound healing process by accelerating the production of collagen, but it also neatens the skin seal, or scar.

When SF-VII, our proprietary silk peptide was applied to skin cells in clinical tests, the results showed a significantly enhanced deposition of collagen and new skin cells, proving the regenerative powers of silk for our skin.

Skin and Wound Healing

The skin is our body’s barrier, protecting our internal organs. So when the skin barrier is breached, the body treats this as an emergency and sets about repairing the skin as quickly as possible. The wound healing process consists of three different stages - broadly speaking, the body enables skin to protect, heal and renew itself.

The Three Stages of Wound Healing

1. Protection
The Inflammatory Response

The very beginning of the healing process is activated when skin is injured. As soon as this happens, the body activates clotting platelets and releases growth factors and stems the flow of blood to the site of the injury.

In the early inflammatory response (lasting for between 2-5 days), the body releases a type of white blood cell known as a neutrophil. These are responsible for protecting the body from bacteria and releasing chemicals known as proteases which begin the removal of damaged skin.

In the later inflammatory response, another type of white blood cell known as a monocyte is released. These too have a powerful antimicrobial action and remove damaged tissue. They are also responsible for initiating the release of chemokines and cytokines.  Cytokines and growth factors signal the production and migration of fibroblast cells, and it is these fibroblast cells which are directly implicated in the production of skin collagen and other connective tissue.

2. Healing
Cellular Proliferation

This is the first regenerative phase of wound healing and it is truly fascinating. It typically begins around three days after injury. The body begins to create new blood vessels, new connective tissue and blood vessels form to replace damaged tissue, the wound begins to contract and new cells begin to resurface at the site of the injury.

This stage can last many weeks and it is within this stage that fibroblast cells are produced, leading to the production of collagen and skin tissue formation. The time it takes for tissue regeneration depends directly on the production of collagen proteins by fibroblast cells.

3. Renewal
